Why QuoteWell chose to buy instead of build

How QuoteWell avoided a growing integration and maintenance burden while keeping engineering focused on customers.

QuoteWell had already started building its own version of Crouton internally.

The project seemed manageable. The data already existed across the company’s systems, and the team had a clear idea of the information they wanted to bring together.

The harder part was everything around it.

Each integration needed to be built and maintained. Changes in upstream systems could break the data flow. Keeping information current meant owning sync logic, edge cases, and ongoing maintenance. Then there was still the work of building a useful product experience on top of the data.

We started to build our own version of Crouton, but the integrations and maintenance demanded engineering bandwidth and focus away from customers. The Crouton team already had the expertise and necessary features to get going just as fast.

Joey, CEOQuoteWell

QuoteWell could have kept investing engineering time into the project, but that became harder to justify as the scope grew. It was useful infrastructure, but maintaining it meant putting engineering bandwidth here instead of on customers.

Crouton gave them a way to get to the same outcome without continuing to own that infrastructure themselves. The integrations were already there, the core product had already been built, and the Crouton team had spent time on many of the problems QuoteWell was just starting to encounter.

The decision ultimately came down to focus. QuoteWell wanted its engineers working on QuoteWell customers, rather than maintaining another internal system.

Buying Crouton lets them get there faster while avoiding a growing maintenance burden.

Common considerations

The three questions every build-or-buy conversation gets to, answered straight.

CroutonOnline
We don’t want our data locked up.
CroutonCrouton keeps your data accessible through its API and MCP, so you can integrate freely without worrying about lock-in.
We want to host it ourselves.
CroutonOn Enterprise plans, Crouton can deploy into your cloud.
We want to fully customize the UI.
CroutonCrouton offers extensive personalization across the people app experience. If you need something entirely bespoke, you can build your own UI on top of the data platform and API later.
